I have over 40 years of teaching experience covering all levels from beginner to advanced, although now I concentrate on teaching students of Grade 5 level or above. My ultimate aim in teaching is to give students the tools with which to achieve musical independence and to make myself unnecessary. My preferred way of operating is to draw out what is inherently in the student, treating each one as an individual, rather than imposing a fit-all blueprint derived from a specific method.
I also prepare students for grade exams, diplomas and festivals where this is appropriate (and have had many successes in this area) but I am equally happy to teach those who wish to play for love and enjoyment, the most important goal being to develop a love of music, piano music in particular, and a life-enhancing skill.
In addition to teaching privately, I have tutored at Coventry and Warwick universities as well as at London College of Music. In these contexts my brief has included working on technique, exploring repertoire from the Western Classical, jazz and popular traditions, sometimes encouraging improvisation and composition. I have delivered masterclasses for organisations such as EPTA (European Piano Teachers’ Association) and ABRSM and was, for many years, a mentor for ABRSM’s professional development Certificate of Teaching course.
